  • CLUW Members Check-In and Greetings from the Canceled CLUW National Executive Board Meeting and Women’s Leadership Skills Conference
    Updated On: May 01, 2020

As was previously advertised, the CLUW National Executive Board Meeting and Women’s Leadership Skills Conference scheduled from March 10-14 regrettably had to be canceled due to the current CONVID pandemic. While this was a hard decision it was the right one for the safety of everyone’s health.

Though the conference was cancelled we wanted to share with the membership the greetings from Sandra L. Williams, Executive Director of the Atlanta North Georgia Labor Conference. Please see here for a full copy of the greetings. You may also click here for Elise Bryant’s planned President’s Report.

We thank everyone who traveled to Atlanta to be a part of the conference or had to cancel right before when the news of the situation was made clear.

Since then the situation has evolved and CLUW checked in with some members who had planned to be at the conference to see how they were doing and to spotlight someone in their community who was doing important work during this time.

Below are some responses, shared with permission:

Sandra Dobbins (UAW): Right now I'm trying to help the homeless with housing at hotels and food. My church FRANKLIN COMMUNITY CHURCH/ Pastor Kevin Riggs is heading this up in Franklin Tennessee even though we all can't be out they sat up online donations and also through mail. Already we have raised over 12,000 dollars GOD IS GOOD.

Carolyn Burton, National CLUW Vice President (TWU): (I would like to spotlight) Pauline Mims President of Grand Prairie/Arlington CLUW Chapter Texas who was honored by the AFL-CIO Texas State Women's Committee for Women's History month for her 14 years of work for the labor movement.

Dana Howe (NALC): The Detroit Metro area has been hard hit and getting worse by the day. Gov. Whitmer has put in place an aggressive program to mitigate the problem. Her latest Executive Order is:  Stay Home, Stay Safe. I am working hard to do that by going out for groceries sparingly and shopping for others in my elderly community at the same time. I have also written a one page summary of the problem and the need to follow the directives of our leaders like Whitmer, which went out on our community e-mail list. There was positive feedback and some said they changed their perspective because of what I had written.

Mellissa Bennett (UAW): I am off work at Ford Motor Company but as a side line I am a volunteer Fire Fighter and EMT so we are staying busy making lots of medical runs and educating the community on social distancing and good hygiene.  Luckily my state of KY is under the wonderful direction of newly elected Governor Andy Beshear, he took a hands on direct position of social distancing and travel bans. Due to his quick forward thinking KY is effected by this virus but not anywhere as bad as other bordering states.

Thank you to these members and the others who shared their stories and the stories of their community. We continue to be grateful for our members.
