Where the Presidential candidates stand
on issues important to working women
Sen. Barack Obama Sen. John McCain

Obama Tax Plan. Only people making more that $250,000 - just 5% of Americans will pay more taxes.  The Obama plan guarantees tax relief for 95% of Americans $500 individual or $1,000 working family.

McCain Tax Plan. Wants to give a 4.4% tax break to people making more than $2.8 million/year.  Has proposed $4 billion in tax breaks to big oil.

Obama on Fair Pay.  Voted for the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to restore protections against pay discrimination that were eliminated by a U.S. Supreme Court Decision.

McCain on Fair Pay.  Opposed to the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.  Says women need more education and training, not legislation.

Obama Healthcare Plan.  Everyone will be covered.  Benefits will be comprehensive, including all essential medical services, preventative, maternity and mental health care, focusing on prevention through increased accessibility.

McCain Health Insurance Plan.  Wants to make the recipient of Health Insurance more responsible for the costs.  Wants to provide tax credits of $2,500 per individual and $5,000.per family to purchase their own Health Insurance. 

Obama on Right to Choose.  Supports Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to choose a safe and legal abortion.  Supports access to comprehensive affordable family planning services.

McCain on Right to Choose.  Opposes Roe v. Wade and supports banning legal abortion and increased funding for abstinence (only)
education. 

Obama on Social Security.  Opposes privatization of Social Security and will work in bipartisan way to preserve it for future generations.  Opposes raising the retirement age.

McCain on Social Security.  Believes like Pres. Bush that private savings accounts are part of social security reform.  Will consider raising the retirement age to fix funding for social security.

Obama and EFCA.  Co-sponsored the Employee Free Choice Act that would restore workers’ freedom to form unions and bargain without employer harassment.

McCain on EFCA. Voted against the EFCA and voted for a national ‘right to work’ for less law that would attempt to eliminate unions altogether.

Obama on Education.  Opposes using public money for private school vouchers.  Plan includes a $4,000 tax credit to help pay for college.

McCain on Education.  Private school vouchers are center of his education platform.  Voted against the College Cost Reduction and Access Act.

Obama on Trade.  Wants to fix NAFTA so that it works for American workers and will insist on enforceable labor and environmental standards in all future trade agreements. 

McCain on Trade.  Supports NAFTA saying it has had a net positive impact on the U.S. economy.  Opposes labor and environmental standards in trade agreements. 

Obama on Iraq War.  Opposed the Iraq war from the beginning.  Supports withdrawing troops responsibly with a 16 month time line by the summer of 2010.

McCain on Iraq War.  Has supported the war and will allow it to continue indefinitely despite the fact that it costs the American tax payers $10 billion/month.
