established in 1979 to empower working women
to assert their rights in the workplace and
in the labor movement. It currently houses

Prevention Works and the Contraceptive
Equity Projects. See Womens Health
Initiatives (right) for short descriptions
of these projects. For detailed descriptions

Wal-Mart
Campaign:
Anti-union Wal-Mart pays low wages, provides
substandard benefits, and extensively imports
from countries that use child and prison labor.
CLUW is working closely with UFCW on this
campaign whose goal is to educate Wal-Mart's
union shoppers about the company's practices
and to motivate those shoppers to help bring
an end to Wal-Mart-imposed working conditions
by helping Wal-Mart workers improve their
lives by organizing a union. |

Legislative
Action:
One of CLUW's founding goals, it is committed
to using legislative action to create public
policy that is favorable to working women
and their families. This site highlights some
of the current key issues before Congress. |

Behind
the Label:
Across the U.S. and Canada the outcry saying
NO to sweatshops is growing, thanks to a campaign
by UNITE! The CLUW component works to make
certain union women have the tools to be an
active part of the growing coalition fighting
sweatshopstheir low wages, substandard
benefits, and massive use of imports from
countries that use child labor. |

| |
Political Action Campaign: Another
of CLUW's founding goals which provides important
information for union women to work on political
action throughout the year. |

Women
in the Global Economy: CLUW is dedicated

Contraceptive
Equity Project: Contraceptive equity
means that if a health plan covers prescription
drugs and devices, it has to cover contraception
too. The project is committed to making certain
that all health plans that cover union members
and their families have contraceptive equity. |
| Cervical
Cancer Prevention Works: CLUW's
own cervical cancer awareness project focuses
on empowering union women to be aware of how
to prevent this deadly disease. Digene, the
company which makes the only FDA-approved
test for HPV (the virus that causes 96% of
cervical cancer cases), has had a long relationship
with CLUW. In 2004 Digene and CLUW worked
closely together on the Yellow
Umbrella Concert Tour -- Digene was a
sponsor and CLUW was a partner. This project
represents a continuation of that working
collaboration. |
